In my search to rediscover my twisted sense of humour, I must go back to the basics. I have no advanced form for education or training when it comes to literature or comedy, so keep in mind that these are my notes and thoughts, not some kind of analysis. I shall take it in stride, re-learning by observing and by doing.

“Probably boysenberries!” *ba-dum-pish*

One method of creating cruel jokes is by understanding and applying the basic formula of all comedy. The famous “Comedy equals tragedy plus time”. You can go beyond this. Begin with comedy (something nice), add tragedy (something bad), revert back and apply the tragedy to the comedy, get dark comedy (something nicely horrible?).

Let us attempt this now, step by step.

   And thus we’ve achieved dark comedy.
   (though most people who haven’t seen the Azumanga Daioh series won’t get it)

But let’s give some thought to pacing and buildup, shall we?

I think my biggest issue is that a lot of the macabre comedy I find is that most of it is based on the shock value. It pushes taboos in your face, expecting you to find it uncomfortably funny and disturbing. There’s no setup, no structure, no punch line and no funny. It’s about playing on instant emotion and appeal to your tolerance (or lack thereof) for schadenfreude. It’s just not funny if it’s not done right. And if it’s not, it gets old really quick. “The Aristocrats” is as good as it gets the first time. After people invented the internet, you have to give equal thought to pacing and build-up.

Then again, perhaps this simplistic form of comedy noir can be considered a steppingstone for greater works of humour. It creates a tolerance for criticism and abstract thought. In the end it’s a product of free speech, and it is only by allowing ourselves to dissect the values we have we can move forward with new ideas and thought.

And then there are dead baby jokes. They seem to be the absolute low one can go in dark humour. When people say “…and then you can add a dead baby joke”, they’re basically saying “…and then you can do something really awful”.

But the thing is, I had to sit down and think for a long while before I could remember any actual dead baby jokes. There really aren’t as many of them as you’d think. I find that kind of odd. We have endless supplies of jokes about all kinds of people. Regardless of whether it is race, gender, body type, sexual orientation, religion, state of mind, nationality, trade or political opinion. We have all kinds of jokes making fun of those people. And they can be cruel as hell. So why so few jokes about deceased infants? There are some though, if you care to find and remember them.

The first two DB jokes that came to mind, was LFG-comics “baby weight joke” and Neurotically Yours “medicated babyheads” episode. They show two very different takes on dark humour, but both are about dead babies.

The LFG joke is a direct joke. A play on words. Simple, yet effective. “I was trying to lose some baby weight. Caused by the baby I ate.” It has the same structure as most jokes about blondes or politicians. It works because the character is a murderous psychotic bastard, and we love him for it. It is not pushed into you face like a lot of hackneyed dark comedy is nowadays. It is not meant to shock the reader with its total disregard for the wellbeing of newborns. It’s a padding joke, woven into a larger comic, and it keeps a light tone.

The overdosed kids in Neurotically Yours have a different angle (horizontal ‘cus they’re dead), the kind of angle that people like me enjoy. I’m not really sure if it’s my enthusiasm for dark comedy or my Scandinavian ancestry, but it works all the same. There is no real spoken joke about the dead babies. It’s the mood and atmosphere that the viewer might find funny. How Germain complains about how hard it is to sweep them of the floor after they hit rigor. She’s sweeping dead babies of the floor with a broom!

It’s hilarious! : )

In the end I think the dead babies have their place in comedy due to the fact that it’s horrible. Dark comedy is about the really bad things in life, and there’s really nothing worse than someones child kicking the bucket. It is the ultimate tragedy. And therefore it can, and should, be made fun of. It’s awwwwwright!

Hopefully I will be able to cover my thoughts on many of these methods, themes and topics. Next time I’ll take a look at dark symbolism and gallows humour. Have a nice day : )

This was all part on some longer rant I created several months ago, that never got finnished. Long story short, I intend to find a way back to my old twisted sence of humour. And I’ll pull anyone who reads this down with me

I haven’t really decided if I should do this in writing or videoform. First post on this topic will be about general concepts, as well as dead baby jokes. I think I’ll do that one in writing, since I’ve pretty much scripted it out already. I made a short video-blog thingie a long time ago, and it was kinda fun. For the three people who reads this, let me know what you think.

….I’m clearly more used to wing it when it comes to front view. I need to do that more, pluss actually draw some hands and feet for a change -_-’. I like the way I chose to draw her nose. I’ve always hated doing that, and was looking for ideas from other webcomic-artists. I’ve chosen Zet’s method (SupernormalStep), because he’s awesome , it gives a lot of room for improvement, and I like drawing noses like that. Her hair is a work in progress tho, I’ve boosted it from older designs of mine (som sorta mix of DarkHero from the epic project I’m putting on ice, and Dawn from BlackFeatherX, omg that’s long ago 0_0)

I should do more anatomy practice. Or any at all, that would be a good start.

Then I drew bunnies, kitten, fruit, gun and zombie bunny with gun shooting fruit.

As for news about PoD in general, I’m going to fix the scetchbook section (I have a faint hope that scetch-a-day might be a returning habit), and install ComicPress for future projects. There may also be a return of PoD Videoblog-thingie, but dunno.
